Area schools on track for OFSAA
More than 30 medals won at Metro regional meet

Tamara Jewett from St. Clements, a private North Toronto school, turned in a dominating performance in the distance events at the huge Metro regional track and field meet held at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke last week, winning gold in both the 1500m and 3000m events.

Jay Boychuk, of St. Michael's College School, another area private school, ran for the cycle in junior men's competition, earning bronze in the 800m, silver in the 1500m and, finally, gold in the 3000m.

A gold-silver combo was turned in by Daniel Cheley, also of St. Michael's, in junior men's 300m hurdles (gold) and 100m hurdles (silver).

Top finishers from this meet, attended by Toronto District School Board and Toronto Catholic District School Board schools, as well as area private schools, qualify for the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) provincial championships which are being held in Hamilton June 5 to 7.

Here's a run down of the medal winners from local schools;

 

St. Mike's (private school)

Gold medals were earned by Kyle Fuller in senior men's 400m hurdles; Derek Wiggan in junior men's shotput; Jay Boychuck in junior men's 3000m; Daniel Cheley in junior men's 300m hurdles; and Michael Stalteri in midget men's 100m hurdles.

Silver medals were earned by Ryan Hurley in senior men's 3000m; Jay Boychuck in junior men's 1500m; Daniel Cheley in junior men's 100m hurdles; the junior men's relay team in the 4x100m; Brendan Hynes in midget men's 3000m; and Negus Webster-Chan in midget men's high jump.

Bronze medals were earned by senior men's relay team in both 4x100m and 4x400m events; and by Jay Boychuck in junior men's 800m.

 

Northern Collegiate (TDSB)

Rob McCulloch won gold in the senior men's high jump.

Caitlin Lanktree earned double silver in midget women's hurdles in both 80m and 300m events. Heather Sinclair nabbed silver in the women's open 1500m steeplechase.

 

North Toronto Collegiate (TDSB)

Madeleine Cummings earned double bronze in senior women's 800m and 1500m events.

 

St. Clements (private school)

Double gold for Tamara Jewett in both senior women's 1500m and 3000m events.

A silver medal was earned by Rachel Jewett in junior girls high jump.

 

De La Salle College (private school)

A silver medal was earned by Brendan Lynch in senior men's javelin.

Bronze medals went to Laura Costen in open women's 1500m steeplechase; Jason Kelly in junior men's 100m; Madeleine Follis in midget women's triple jump; and the 4x100m relay team.

 

Bishop Strachan (TCDSB)

Bronze medals were earned by Ranechea Ellis in junior women's 100m; and by Sasha Brodka in midget women's 400m.

 

Branksome Hall (private school)

Emily Kawaguchi wins gold in midget women's high jump.
