East York Collegiate soccer teams seek titles

Both senior and junior team undefeated

The soccer season has certainly been a long one for East York Collegiate.

Too long, if you ask East York C.I. phys ed head Mike Perovic.

Both Goliaths senior and junior teams made it to their respective Toronto District School Board finals that were held yesterday, both running past The Mirror deadline.

Both Goliath teams won their city semifinal games earlier this week, the seniors on Tuesday 2-1 over Scarborough's Birchmount Park Collegiate; the juniors on Monday 3-0 over Scarborough's Woburn Collegiate.

Both East York teams were forced to play their games long after their south division regular season and playoffs wrapped up - last fall.

That's because the south division plays its soccer schedule in the fall, unlike the rest of the city that plays in the spring.

So the south division representatives have to wait until late spring to resume their schedule in the city-wide playoffs.

"It's unfair in a lot of ways," said Pervic in an interview at the time, adding that it restricts the coaches and players ability to be involved in other sports.

Back in the fall in their south division, both East York teams were undefeated in the regular season, the seniors, coached by Tom Dridas 5-0, the juniors, coached by John Simopoulos, 6-0. The seniors won their semifinal 4-1 over University of Toronto School, the juniors 3-2 over Marc Garneau.

In quarter-final action the seniors won 3-0 over Oakdale, the juniors 4-1 over Parkdale.
