Volleyball action hits Ashbridges Bay this weekend

This weekend is the 2008 National Beach Volleyball Championships being held at Ashbridges Bay.

More than 300 teams, some of which are international, will be playing on more than 90 courts at the tournament.

Categories include 14U, 16U, 18U, 21U, 24U and a senior Division 1 and 2.

The courts at Ashbridges Bay are at the foot of Coxwell Avenue on the sand.

Register now for Rexdale Open

A group of old friends who met at St. Benedict's Catholic School are holding the fourth annual Rexdale Open, Sept. 20. The tournament starts at noon at the Kleinburg golf course.

The cost for registration is $125, which includes rental of a golf cart and dinner. There will be prizes awarded after a raffle. Proceeds from the event go to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation's Ontario chapter. Call Joe at 416-762-1880 to register.

Pro tennis, anyone?

See some Canadian tennis professionals battle it out at the Kew Beach ProAm Tennis Charity event on Saturday, Sept. 20 from 2 to 7 p.m.

The event features player participation with the pros, a pro exhibition game at 5:30 p.m., serve speed and target competitions, prizes, a silent auction and hot dogs on the boardwalk.

Professionals at the tournament include Karl Hale, Adam Baranowski, Jim Boyce, Dale Power, Brett Cooper, Stefan D'Almaida, Petya Marinova and Chris Gostek.

Proceeds from the event will go to Community Centre 55.

Kew Gardens Tennis Club is at 77 Kew Beach Ave. at the foot of Kenilworth Avenue.
