The following is the text of an e-mail Mayor David Miller sent to members of council on Monday at 9:21 a.m..
I wish to confirm to Members of Council that I received official notice
from Ms. Hoy this morning that she will be leaving the position of City
Manager effective October 6, 2008.
Shirley Hoy's devotion to excellence has positioned Toronto's public
service as the pre-eminent civic administration in Canada during
challenging times. I have enjoyed working with Shirley and always
appreciated her professionalism and straightforward advice.
I also wish to advise members of Council that I am recommending that
the City's current Deputy City Manager and Chief Financial Officer, Joe
Pennachetti, become the next City Manager effective October 6, 2008. I
will be seeking Executive Committee and Council confirmation of the
recommendation at our next meetings scheduled for September.
Mr. Pennachetti has significant experience in municipal government and
he will continue to bring the kind of professionalism to the City
Manager position that is both appreciated and critical to the success
of our City.
If Council confirms the City Manager appointment, Cam Weldon, the
City's current Treasurer will become Acting Deputy City Manager and
Chief Financial Officer on the same date until a recruitment process
for that position is completed.
Please join me in thanking Shirley for her service to the City of
Toronto and congratulating Joe on being recommended as our next City
Manager.
A news conference is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. today and a news release with this announcement will be issued at that time.
