When you're a price-conscious shopper, buying trendy clothes for your child during your back-to-school shopping should take a back seat to the necessities.

However, Robin Keeler, fashion director for Yorkdale Mall in North York, said it is possible to fit a few trendy pieces in so don't be surprised if your kid begs you for these items.

• Anything with a plaid or tartan pattern

• Denim is always in (jeans and skirts)

• T-shirts with graphic prints

• Leggings and tights are a must-have this season

• Hoodies and cardigan sweaters for boys and girls

• For boys, cargos, relaxed jeans and corduroys

• Polo shirts

• Ballet flats and lace-up booties for girls

• Knitted caps and peak caps are great accessories

• Pieces that easily layer - kids want these pieces to mix and match and create an individual style

Besides clothes, back-to-school supplies are a must-have for kids returning to school.

Here are some supplies from Staples Business Depot you may want to consider:

• Magnetic Wallpaper makes a well-used locker look better than new

• Scented plush magnetic animals look cute and smell superb. New this year: Funky Monkey and Panda Bear

• Locker Basket is a perfect storage solution for binders, loose papers and gym clothes

Supplies for the classroom:

• With an array of designs, binders and notebooks double as fashion accessories.

• Calculators come in fun shapes, colours and sizes.

• Backpacks - see link on backpack safety

• Pencil cases.

Students are going green for back-to-school.

According to a survey conducted by Staples and Angus Reid, more than 85 per cent of Canadian households with school-age children will consider ecologically friendly options while back-to-school shopping.

The survey also revealed that Canadian families are 75 per cent more interested in green options today than they were five years ago.

Here a few samples of green products available at Staples.

• Hilroy Enviro-Plus brand refill paper for binders and Hilroy exercise books are manufactured in Canada using 50 per cent recycled paper and 30 per cent post-consumer waste.
