Re: 'Tiny city parkette may get huge financial upgrade,' News, Nov. 7

Of the dozens of neighbours I have spoken to regarding the proposed improvements to Grattan Park a clear majority expressed concern, opposition or shock regarding the large amount of money ($300,000) being considered to fund the project. I would not say they were opposed to improvements to the park itself, as the wording of the article seems to suggest. With regard to the type of improvements to be carried out in the park, many seem to have taken a reflective attitude while several have suggested creative lower-cost solutions incorporating the existing concrete footings into the design rather than their costly removal.

As for the comment regarding my suggestions to the budget committee, my purpose was primarily to provide members with information and raise some issues. I do not suggest putting off expenditures as the article seems to indicate. I am in favour of improvements to Grattan Park as I think my record of volunteer gardening in the park demonstrates. I would like to see this done at a much lower cost and if possible following a cost-saving design incorporating the large existing concrete structure.
