Local Girl Guides are hosting a Breakfast with Santa and marketplace sale to raise money for a special trip to celebrate 100 years of Guiding.
Girl Guide leader Kai Simmons said they are planning on taking the 22 girls, ranging in age from 12-16, to London in 2010 and have been busy raising money.
"That where Guiding started and the girls really want to go to London," she said.
The trip will also take them on a Scandinavian cruise, which Simmons said is interesting because Agnes Baden-Powell, the founder of Guides and Scouts took hundreds of youth on a Scandinavian cruise in the 1930s. They were unaware of this until after selecting it as part of their trip.
"We thought that was really fitting," she said.
The fundraising events take place Saturday, Nov. 29 at Harmony Hall, 2 Gower St. The Breakfast with Santa runs from 8 to 10 a.m., it costs $10 per person and includes a breakfast of sausages, pancakes and tea or coffee or juice, as well as a photo with Santa. Capacity is limited to 100 so preregistration is required. Those interested in attending can call Simmons at 416-425-7114 or e-mail crsimmons@sympatico.ca.
The Marketplace opens at 10 a.m. and runs until 2 p.m. and is open to the general public. It features a craft sale, bake sale and the sale of gently used toys.
Simmons said each of the girls and their families are pitching in to raise the money for their celebratory trip. They helped make the crafts and each family is donating at least two items for the bake sale. The girls are also helping serve the breakfast.
"The girls have worked really hard," she said, adding they're learning a lot of life skills through this and the other fundraising endeavours. The girls have also been busy selling cookies, hot dogs on Canada Day, hosting a spooky super last month and other fundraising activities.
There will also be a tea room at the marketplace from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a plate of sandwiches, goodies, and coffee or tea at a cost of $5 per person.
They are also holding a gingerbread house decorating workshop at a cost of $20 per house. It is recommended that those wishing to attend contact Simmons in advance.
