As the holiday season approaches, police are reminding shoppers to take precautions to avoid being victimized by thieves.

Police say pickpockets often work in crowded malls, so shoppers should keep their wallets and purses close to their bodies and shouldn't carry too much cash. Shoppers should also park in well-lit areas because thieves don't like witnesses.

Police also offer the following advice:

* close all car windows and lock the doors:

* take the car keys with you and never hide a second set of keys in the vehicle (thieves know the hiding places);

* don't leave purchases in view;

* never leave your vehicle running, even if you'll be gone for only a minute;

* don't leave your vehicle registration in the car (keep it in your purse or wallet);

* try to shop during less busy times.
