Open letter to Governor General Michaelle Jean

Your Excellency,

I am appalled at the prospects of a coalition government proposed by the Liberal, NDP and Bloc parties. These parties have no mandate from the electorate to form any sort of Government of Canada. If materialized, this government would make a mockery of our election system that democratically elected the existing government. The opposition parties have the facility and an obligation to try to fetch down the government and force an election if they so choose and if they find themselves in this situation, this is what they should be doing.

Other than an emergency period during the war, Canada has never had a coalition government in spite of many minority governments before. Certainly the government has never seen "hijacking" by opposition parties as the Liberal and NDP parties would effectively do under this proposal. We must recognize the devastating effect on our economy such a government, under these circumstances would have. Canada's image to the world would be one of instability and we would suffer the negative consequences that would result.

I am not particularly well-informed of the technicalities of our electoral system or the details of your responsibilities, however it seems the Liberal and NDP parties could not form a coalition government without the Bloc also being a part of the coalition. Promises by the Bloc to support the coalition should carry no weight in qualifying this coalition as a government.

Your Excellency I urge you, on behalf of our great country, to use your position and influence to do what you possibly can to stop this abuse of our electoral system. I ask you to recognize this is not a legitimate procedure to over throw the government but no more than a power grab by selfish individuals to promote themselves.
