Muslim religious leaders of Greater Toronto have "condemned unequivocally" the attacks that took nearly 200 lives last week in Mumbai, India.

The Canadian Council of Imams "would like to express our deepest shock and disgust at the bombings and takings of hostages" in Mumbai, a statement from the group reads.

"We hope that the perpetrators of such heinous acts are quickly brought to justice."

The attacks in Mumbai "are nothing to do with faith," Dr. Abdul Hai Patel, a Scarborough resident and University of Toronto chaplain who is the council's interfaith director added in an interview.

"People hear Muslim names (are involved), they start blaming Muslims," he said, but Islam condemns the killing of innocents.
