The St. Barnabas Catholic School girls volleyball team won the Toronto Catholic District School Board city championship last week.

The Blues won against St. Martin de Porres 25-17 and 25-12 in the final game.

The team's record for the season is 112 wins and 11 losses.

They have been invited to compete at the Glashan Cup in Ottawa in January.

"Coming from a background where they do not play volleyball outside of school, the team has done exceptionally well for themselves showing a fantastic amount of drive, determination and dedication to their sport," said coach Candice Carvalho.

She added the girls are a great group and are modest about their skills.

"The girls are considerable athletes, but they also conduct themselves with the principles of good sportsmanship both on and off the court," she said.

During their games, the girls play hard and rarely let the ball hit the floor, she said.

"They will dive, get up, dive again, slide on their knee pads, even crash into things to get the ball back into play if for some reason it doesn't go where it should," she said. "They are extremely co-ordinated as a team, often playing over and around each other, with a seemingly intrinsic sense of where the ball is and where it should be going."

In the city finals player Roxanne Santos served 24 consecutive points to finish the game with a score of 25-1. Another player, Pransiya Franco served 19 consecutive points in the span of a game.

Our Lady of Lourdes - 1st of 5 teams

Catholic Cup Tournament - 2nd out of 25 teams

St. Barnabas Invitational Tournament - Site Champions

Holy Child Tournament - 1st of 15 teams

Halton Provincial Cup - 3rd out of 48 teams

Toronto Catholic School Board Divisional Tournament - 1st out of 5 teams

Toronto Catholic School Board Regional Tournament - 1st out of 12 teams

Toronto Catholic School Board City Finals - 1st out of 8 teams
