Nease cartoon hit the nail on the head

Regarding Steve Nease's cartoon regarding Mayor David Miller and the handgun ban June 4.

Congratulations, your cartoonist has hit the nail squarely on the head again with his depiction of our beloved Mayor David Miller, as usual shooting fish in a barrel.

Do not target the people breaking the law, target the highly visible innocent. Many of the people who use the firing range at Union Station are police officers and at least one Olympic hopeful, I believe. I know that range is there in the attic, but I have never, ever heard a sound. Surely it is a good installation.

Miller, it is not used by criminals. The range is secure and has an excellent record. Members of our armed forces have trained there.

Certainly fining victims of graffiti vandalism is just as stupid, punitive and ineffective. I have a better idea. Why not ban murder or wounding? Then if you survive a shooting you would be heavily fined by the City of Toronto, let's say $10,000. Surely that would put an end to this gun violence once and for all. If the victim dies, fine the estate.

The only thing wrong with the cartoon is that it does not make Miller look as foolish as he makes himself look. If we, the electorate are smarter, we should vote at the next municipal election and tell Miller what we think of him. In the last election only 38 per cent of us voted. If the other 62 per cent voted, maybe things would be different and better. This is still a democracy, let's exercise our rights.
