Etobians expect more involvement from councillors

Tamara Shephard's article, "OMB supports Lake Promenade homeowner", in the May 23 issue of the Etobicoke Guardian raises a number of questions.

None of the nearby property owners who were present at the Committee of Adjustment had pre-knowledge of the OMB hearing regarding 274 Lake Promenade. They simply did not know about it, as they did not know the intricate workings of that board. They did not attend.

In bygone years, when an issue was turned down at the city's Committee of Adjustment, the City of Etobicoke, as a matter of rule, appeared in opposition at the board when a party chose to pursue that avenue. We also had interested city councillors, in (former councillors Ruth) Greer and (Irene) Jones, who knew their constituents and their constituents' concerns and helped them stay abreast of the inner workings of the city and the board. Two letters from me to councillor Mark Grimes asking for help on this issue have gone unanswered.

Why are the local property owners opposed to this development? Because it will change the character of the street. Of the nine houses along Lake Promenade from Longbranch Avenue to 35th Street, eight are listed in the City of Toronto's Heritage Property Inventory. Some have lost some of their character in the intervening 100 years since their construction and others not. None are beyond restoration.

The plans Mr. Pariselli presented at the committee of adjustment, (some have called a monster home), are better suited to Woodbridge than crammed in amongst our heritage houses.

At committee Mr. Pariselli conceded that the house design he was presenting did look like a large suburban home and that he could make changes. The simple fact of the matter is that once a builder gets his square footage allotment there is little else, except the height bylaw, that controls the looks of what he builds. Mr. Pariselli has not made his current design plans known to his neighbours.

The OMB will likely be asked by our residence's group to revue its decision and we are looking for community support.
