Budgeting an important life skill

As a graduate student of the post secondary education system, I am thrilled to see that elementary students are being exposed to the harsh financial realities of adulthood. In a recent article printed in The Etobicoke Guardian, illustrating the reactions of students participating in "The Economics of Staying in School" program, I have no doubt that this program will open the eyes of students.

I often reflect on where I would be if I didn't further my education past high school. Not only has it provided me with the skills to obtain a great job, but it has also provided me with many life skills that cannot be taught on the job. Financially, it has allowed me to explore other countries, pursue interests and above all live comfortably. All of which I could not have done without my post secondary education.

I understand that many pressures exist for students; however, it appears that the choice of post secondary is not one of them. Education must be seen as an investment that can produce great amounts of happiness and financial stability. Many students would argue that they can work and make enough money to survive. The reality is, without university, college or trade school, their future may be grim. The cost of living is constantly changing. Increases in entertainment costs, transportation costs and other necessities of life, leave them with very little money in the savings account.

In this reader's opinion, the program is an absolute must and should become a permanent part of the school curriculum.
