Re: 'Blast prompts residents to launch lawsuits,' News, Aug. 15.

I agree this unfortunate situation deserves a settlement as soon as possible to compensate the 12,000 people and businesses for their losses during the explosion at Sunrise Propane Industrial Gases on Murray Road.

As far as I can understand, $300 million in class-action suits have been filed. Defendants in the suits include the propane company, the city of Toronto, the province and the Technical Standards and Safety Authority.

After reading the article, several question appeared in my mind.

If the suits are settled in favor of the residents and businesses to cover their losses, how will that affect the government-connected defendants? Do they have a special insurance that pays out their settlement? If not, will the settlement be paid out the general public tax kitty, which, in my opinion, would be a grave burden for the taxpayers due to the fact the propane company should never have been allowed to set up shop so close to a residential area?
