Over the years, the CNE has continued to lose the greatness it once held; it's just become too commercial and I'm not impressed.
When I pay $14 admission, I go to have fun, not to go to the Direct Energy Centre to shop for stereos, TVs, furniture and other things I can get at any mall. There's just too much flea market stuff.
It was stimulating viewing merchandise representing different countries. But then you come to the Canadian exhibit expecting to see an assortment of Canadian products representing our culture, only to find someone doing tattoos. Do we lack the merchandise to represent our Canadian culture or is it that we just import so much we are losing our identity?
A pleasant surprise might be if CNE officials were to use the new BMO field and stage events that would give us a little of the nostalgia the Grandstand once held. Kids don't believe me when I recall stories of the grandeur the Grandstand held - car stunt derby, the circus, dozens of well-known celebrities and extravagant musical tattoos.
Observe the crowds aimlessly walking around, not really partaking in the games or rides. Most people are looking for something that's not there anymore. The CNE needs a shot in the arm.
