The Juvenile AAA Leaside Kings closed out the hockey season on a high note last weekend at the Ontario Hockey Federation provincial championships after a middle-of-the-road forth place regular season finish.
It was the third visit to the provincial championships in five years for the Kings, who hosted the minor hockey series this year out of East York's Victoria Village Arena.
The Humberview Huskies, last year's provincial champs, defeated the 25-7-4 Kings in the city finals earlier this year. The home side went undefeated and got to even the score in the end, beating Humberview 7-2 and 8-4 in the round robin and the final.
The team scored an astounding 41 goals while allowing 15 in the five-team round series, proving that it had some depth up front and on the blueline.
"They all worked really hard, everyone contributed and our defense and goaltending came up phenomenal right through," said Stephen Gregoire, a member of the East York area club for 13 years, noting that his over-aged players are, from his standpoint, a step ahead of the rest of the over-age players in the loop, and "leadership from them lent itself well in a tournament of this nature."
A member of the local minor hockey league for 14 years, Gregoire said the provincial crown was redemption for being short-changed a bit this season. The host Kings squad has been to the provincial finals three of the last five years and lost to the Huskies in the city final this year.
Huskies coach Gord Roche said the hosts did a good job in containing his charges.
After winning the Silver Stick tournament earlier this year, the GTHL regular season Promitere Cup and the city championship, Roche thought a provincial title was there for the taking, but the Kings weren't having it.
'They were very vengeful and we made some mistakes,' he said.
The Ontario Minor Hockey Association Ajax Knights and Windsor Jr. Spitfires also attended the tournament, as did North End Flames from the Northern Ontario Hockey Association.
